Work in progress

My winter project with my child Alfie has been to build a canoe for fishing. After much procrastination, we made a good start this weekend.

Presidential candidates and fly fishing

Field & Stream’s Fflogger fly fishing blog is throwing its hat into the Presidential candidate endorsement ring. “The first campaign that sends us a sign that its candidate has even a slight understanding or interest in flyfishing (and better yet, gives us an indication on how they will make the country better for flyfishing) will [...]

Unharried in the Uwharrie

With the return of high temperatures, this was a good day to escape the city. Temperatures in the Uwharrie National Forest were somewhat more tolerable. The Uwharrie River was very low and absolutely slack, thanks to the ongoing drought, so the fishing was sub-optimal. I caught only one puny (~5 inches) smallmouth bass, but a [...]

My trophy

The guide from my fly fishing trip in New Mexico earlier this summer just sent the photos he took. Here’s me holding the biggest catch of the day.

The Great Outdoors in Cuba and Orlando

Bill Heavey’s two pieces (a feature-length article and his regular back-page column) in the current Field & Stream make for a nice study in contrast.
Heavey’s account of the Cuban national bass fishing tournament will appeal to anglers and non-anglers alike. The event, Heavey writes,
is almost exactly like the Bassmaster Classic except for a [...]

Satire or sexism?

The latest issue of Field & Stream has this doosie of a letter-to-the-editor:
I was reading the latest issue of F&S and realized that you were putting a lot of material about women in your magazine. You should be running full-page ads telling sportsmen to write to their congressmen and get them to pass laws [...]

Me gotta go pole the pirogue down the bayou

I really want one of these. I’d name mine “The Pierogi”.

Could Holy Joe gain acceptance in the Goyishe Old Party?

Commenting on the ongoing implosion of John McCain’s candidacy, Michael Froomkin says he’s “prepared for Joe Lieberman to change parties and to sweep the early Republican primaries”. Commenter Mr. Flibble dismisses the scenario: “[A] dirty jew for president? The white trash that makes up the GOP base isn’t going to sit still for that, [...]

My useless contribution to web search

For no good reason, I’ve created a Google custom search engine for fly fishing. It currently includes 146 fly fishing-related sites, and I will add more as I encounter them. Even I can’t think of any good use for such a thing. But the idea of making my own custom search engine seemed kind of [...]

Where I’d rather be right now (or pretty much any time)

Fly fishing for smallmouth bass during the White Fly hatch on the Susquehanna River is among the greatest experiences of my life. For now, I’ll have to settle for watching this guy do the same on the Mississippi.
Warning: Normal people will find this video rather dull.
