While I wouldn’t want to dispute someone else’s personal experiences or perspective, I feel the need to respond to this comment.

I’m not from NC, but I’ve lived here for several years now, and I’m happy to call it home. I don’t personally know very many people from Stokes County; the few I do know are plenty advanced and educated, and if they have red necks, its from working outside, which is nothing shameful. I knew and encountered plenty of backward, ignorant, racist clods back when I lived in New York and Chicago and Philadelphia.

So, I wanted to emphasize that my serious discomfort with glorifying the Confederacy is not based on any false sense of “Northern superiority” (which too many of my fellow Yankees do suffer from), or mistaken belief that the South has some kind of monopoly on ignorance and racism. Having lived in a lot of states across this country, my sense is that hateful assholes are pretty evenly distributed.

I am from NC and not from Stokes County (thank God). This county has the most redneck, backward, and ignorant people. They often are racist.

this was posted forever ago, but i was wondering if perhaps you knew who made this image? its one of my absolute favorites, i posted it in my blog, i printed it out, laminated it and use it as a spoke card in my bike, and i was thinking of getting the man tattooed. just wondering if you know who to credit?

There is a problem in defining “free market” capitalism. Is their Free Market at all anywhere in the world? Refer to any textbook on economics, one will get a clear picture of free market definition. What we see in today’s capitalism is Monopoly Market Capitalism which is exploitative in nature. Laws are passed (limited liability companies, trade markes, patents, trade union, etc.) to bestow privileges on a group of elite class of the society. As such there is class conflict in the economy. The society is thus divided into privileged and non-privileged people.
Economists including some leading Noble Laureates are marketing the free market capitalism to save capitalists. Or may be the capitalists are getting this done as the economists, as termed by Paul Samuelson as ‘kept men’, are serving the cause of capitalists. Hence I am afraid whether the survey would serve the right purpose.
