Some questions just answer themselves

Salon’s review of “UP” asks:

Pixar’s latest is bursting with charming visual touches and life-affirming messages, so why does it feel so cold?

Ummm, that’s why.

Being There

I finally realized who Sarah Palin reminds me of:

President “Bobby”: Mr. Gardner, do you agree with Ben, or do you think that we can stimulate growth through temporary incentives?
Chance the Gardener: As long as the roots are not severed, all is well. And all will be well in the garden.
President “Bobby“: In the garden.
Chance the Gardener: Yes. In the garden, growth has it seasons. First comes spring and summer, but then we have fall and winter. And then we get spring and summer again.

Has he lost his mind? Can he see or is he blind?

I’m not especially a superhero movie fan, but I enjoyed Iron Man very much. Of course, I’d probably enjoy Kung Fu Panda if it starred Robert Downey Jr.

Cold, dead hands

Charlton Heston, whose memorable roles included Moses, Ben Hur, Michaelangelo, and NRA shill, has gone to the eternal chariot race in the sky. His gun is now ripe for the plucking.

Oh Landsman, Where Art Thou? or No Country For Old Jews

Watch your back for the man in black

Greensboro film-maker Andy Coon is working on a series of shorts called The Corporate Assassin. The previews suggest something along the lines of The Office meets Zatoichi.

No movie for feint hearts

I have no idea why I’ve never read any of Cormac McCarthy’s novels. But after seeing the Coen brothers’ adaptation of No Country for Old Men, it is clear I’ve been missing out on something. The movie is outstanding in every respect: compellingly written, tensely directed, gorgeously filmed, powerfully acted. I fully agree with critics who have rated this picture among the Coen brothers’ greatest work.

A new look at the 1L experience

The Trials of Law School is a documentary film that follows eight law students through their first year. Though these particular students are from the University of Oklahoma, I suspect much or all of what they experience would be true at any U.S. law school. The film also features commentary by 25 legal scholars, including my Elon Law colleague, Marty Peters. I’ve only seen the trailer, but I look forward to viewing the entire thing and discussing it with my new students and colleagues.

This really makes me wish I got the Sundance Channel. I guess I’ll have to wait for the DVD.
