McElree’s Wine of Cardui

Washington, North Carolina
“Wine of Cardui” was a patent medicine in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, marketed as a cure for “female diseases”. In 1916, the Chattanooga Medicine Company, which made Wine of Cardui, won a libel suit against the American Medical Association, which had published an article in its Journal calling the product “a worthless fraud”. While the jury found for the plaintiff, they evidently didn’t think much of the product; instead of the $200,000 in damages requested, the jury awarded one penny.

I’d seen this poster in various places around San Francisco, and thought it was a whimsical prank. But it turns out to be a viral marketing campaign for hands-free mobile phone equipment (now mandated by California law).
Woodie tree farms

I suppose that “Woodie” is a good name for a tree farmer. But, if I were named Woodie, I don’t think I’d name my son Richard.
I certainly hope they don’t manage any hotels

No doubt this company, located in downtown Greensboro, deals only with suitably clean and pest-free properties. But I’m not sure they’d be my choice if I were on the market.
